Velamazán draws the eye to the ruins of the Church of San Sebastián, which preserve Romanesque remains. This building alone provides access to a place where historical traces, landscape and fixed events create different points of focus.

Culture and History

The tower of the Church of San Sebastián is now the bell tower; originally, it was a massive defensive tower or castle. Its present-day function and former classification stand side by side here, without the tower losing its striking historical dimension.

The Hermitage of Virgen de la Dehesa, located northwest of Velamazán, was originally Romanesque and dates from the early 13th century. Its portal and walls have been preserved. It is therefore one of the buildings where date and visible fabric can be considered together.

Velamazán also preserves the Rollo, or Picota, a very old landmark of the town. The Palace of the Marquises of Velamazán in Velamazán is a Renaissance building from the 17th century.

The historical clues differ in form: preserved remains, the present-day use of an architectural element, a traditional name and the classification of a palace offer different perspectives on the place. Those who do not wish to limit culture to a single period can perceive these themes separately and compare them with one another.

Nature and Landscape

The Altos de Barahona Site of Community Importance forms part of the municipality of Velamazán. An old lookout of Muslim origin overlooks Velamazán from the hill above the town.

The landscape aspect and the historical landmark offer two different ways of interpreting the place. The Altos de Barahona area thus stands as a separate spatial reference alongside the lookout on the hill. This makes it possible to incorporate natural surroundings and history as separate priorities into personal planning, without combining them into a single attraction.
