La Hoya in the Sierra de Béjar: Snow, Trails and Tradition

From La Hoya, the La Covatilla ski resort can be reached; it is located within the municipality of La Hoya and at an altitude of over 2,000 m. Nature and trails
La Hoya is located in the Sierra de Béjar at 1,242 metres above sea level. Its elevation provides views of many places in the province of Salamanca and of nearby mountains. Part of the LIC Riberas del Río Tormes y Afluentes (ES4150085) lies within the municipality of La Hoya.
The circular route “Paseo por Vallejera de Riofrío, La Hoya y Navacarros” is 7 km long and has a low difficulty level. The GR 10 long-distance trail reaches the province of Salamanca from San Bartolomé de Béjar in the province of Ávila and passes through the municipality of La Hoya. From the town of La Hoya, the GR 10 climbs through oak groves to the road leading to the La Covatilla ski slope.
Townscape and history
The founding of La Hoya dates back to the medieval repopulation. The Iglesia del Espíritu Santo is a small parish church in La Hoya dedicated to the Holy Spirit.
Traditional houses in La Hoya have large roof overhangs that protect them from snow. Large galleries with wooden balconies are used in La Hoya’s traditional architecture to dry cured meats. Traditional architecture in La Hoya also includes examples with wide stone walls and granite ashlar surrounds on openings and building corners.
Festivals
On 18 June, La Hoya celebrates a festival in honour of its patron saint, Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. At the end of August, La Hoya holds a festival in honour of the Espíritu Santo, with religious and social activities.
Getting there
La Hoya is connected by roads to Salamanca’s former national road and to the province of Ávila. The connection to the Ruta de la Plata motorway is also nearby.
