Tamames: History, Crafts and Paths through the Landscape

History

In October 1809, the Duke del Parque chose Tamames as the site of a battle in the Spanish War of Independence.

Culture and Crafts

The church in Tamames houses a 16th-century satin chasuble decorated with friezes of saints.

The Torreón de Tamames measures 12.20 metres on each side, is approximately 16 metres high and has walls up to 2.10 metres thick.

Two granite sculptures have been preserved in Tamames; archaeologists refer to them as “cabezas cortadas”. They are remains of castros near the present-day settlement.

Tamames’s traditional potteries produced cooking vessels, pots, jugs, bowls, warming vessels, calvocheros, some pipes and, above all, pucheros, as well as toys.

The Méndez jewellers work with charra filigree, preserving the traditional craft while also developing it further.

La Fuente Roldán spring has been used for therapeutic purposes since the 18th century.

Festivals and Regional Specialities

The local Los Cencerros festival takes place in the last week of January, from Thursday to Saturday. During the festival, children walk through the town with their cowbells.

La Torta is eaten at a picnic on Easter Monday. The round, flat bread is usually filled with potato omelette or cured meats.

The Hornazo tradition takes place on Lunes de Aguas and involves a typical pastry filled with cured meats.

Nature and Trails

The Sendero micológico Tamames–Aldeanueva de la Sierra is a 13.8-kilometre circular route connecting Tamames and Aldeanueva de la Sierra. It has an elevation gain of 352 metres, is considered moderately difficult and requires approximately four hours of walking.

The combination of distance, elevation gain, difficulty level and approximate walking time provides several factual points of comparison for different outdoor plans. The approximate walking time and stated difficulty level offer two distinct points of reference; together with distance and elevation gain, they can be considered separately when assessing a hiking day, for example when the time frame and route profile are weighted differently.

At the Picadero Escuela de Equitación in Tamames, traditional rural tasks and fieldwork are demonstrated and explained to the public during its activities.

The nearby oak forests provide foxes and wild boar with a natural refuge.
