Culture and History

Valdelamatanza combines sacred art, inherited history and distinctive places in the landscape. The Iglesia San Antonio Abad church houses a Romanesque image of the Virgen del Rosario from the 13th century. Another special feature of the church interior is the carved figure of San Marcos made from pear wood. It was formerly placed in wells to ward off drought; this significance is part of the figure’s historical tradition.

Traces of bygone eras can also be found outside the church. La cabeza del Castillo is located near Páramo el Canchal de la Zorra. According to tradition, a Vettonian fort is said to have stood there. Stone vaults can also be seen near the Páramo, traditionally attributed to the Vettonians. The different forms – church art, a traditional fortified site and stone vaults – each provide their own focus for cultural and historical discoveries.

Landscape and Water

One of Valdelamatanza’s distinctive landmarks is Los 14 Pilares, an old livestock watering place consisting of 14 consecutive stone basins. From there, you can enjoy a view of the Sierra de Hervás. Another viewpoint is Páramo el Canchal de la Zorra, which offers a broad view across the Hornacinos valley.

The Fuente de los 14 pilares lies between Valdelamatanza and El Cerro. It also consists of 14 consecutive stone basins, from which the spring water emerges in a cascading flow. The two references to the basins retain their different names and contexts: in one case as an old livestock watering place, and in the other as a spring on a route between two places. The Sierra de Francia, a mountain range, is located in the surroundings of Valdelamatanza. It is also home to the Palace of the Dukes of Béjar, the Torreón del Calvitero summit and the Canchal de la Ceja mountain range.
