Culture

In Hondura de Huebra, the wedding celebration included the tradition of “la espiga”: the newlyweds’ gifts were received on a table and on seats in the street, and displayed publicly. Weddings in Hondura de Huebra ended with the “baile de la rosca”, a competition for couples in which a bollo maimón was awarded as the prize.

History

Barbalos was founded during the medieval repopulation carried out by the kings of León. In the district of Hondura, which belongs to Barbalos, stands the parish church of San Miguel Arcángel, a Romanesque building from the 12th century.

Landscape

Barbalos lies in the southern Campo Charro in the province of Salamanca. The village is located south of the Campo de Salamanca and north of the Sierras de Tamames and de Quintana. The terrain consists of Precambrian and Paleozoic schists and sandstones. Pastureland and dehesas shape land use. Barbalos has a Mediterranean climate with continental characteristics.

The Arroyo de los Caños crosses Barbalos from east to west. It is a right-bank tributary of the Río Huebra in the Duero basin. This means that the landscape can be viewed from different perspectives: geological formations, open land use, climatic characteristics and the course of a specific waterway stand alongside one another as distinct features of the area.

Routes

The DSA-224 provides access to Barbalos from the DSA-223. The route between Escurial de la Sierra and Hondura runs without signposts along wide paths in a dense network of trails connecting farmsteads and meadows. The Ruta de las Dehesas briefly follows the road to Barbalos on the way to Hondura de Huebra. The two routes described therefore differ in their course: the connection between Escurial de la Sierra and Hondura uses wide, unsigned paths through the trail network, while the Ruta de las Dehesas briefly takes the road to Barbalos on the section leading to Hondura de Huebra. Thus, an extensive network of paths and a clearly identified road section stand alongside one another as distinct route features.
