Calzada De Valdunciel on the Vía de la Plata

Calzada de Valdunciel is closely connected to the Vía de la Plata. On the Vía de la Plata, the route from Calzada de Valdunciel follows a path designed for travel on foot, by bicycle and on horseback. The row of large cylindrical stones is known as "Restos de Miliarios" and traditionally served as stepping stones for crossing the nearby La Vega stream; some pieces have been identified as fragments of Roman milestones from the ancient Roman road known as the Vía de la Plata. In the case of the five stone fragments at Calzada de Valdunciel, their identification as Roman milestones is uncertain because they lack any inscriptions. Culture and History

Fuente Buena is a medieval vaulted fountain made of ashlar masonry that preserves a Roman granite funerary stele depicting a woman in a half-length figure and a vessel for libation offerings.

The Iglesia de Santa Elena is a single-nave church dating from the 16th to the 18th century, divided into three sections. Its gallery contains remains of an earlier temple dating from the 12th to the 13th century; the church also has up to six Baroque altarpieces.

The Centro de Interpretación de los Caminos Históricos is located in the former Corral del Concejo. It displays panels with texts and information, models, photographs and an audiovisual presentation about the history of the routes in Salamanca.

Nature

The Mirador Ornitológico is a bird- and landscape-watching viewpoint at the edge of the town, with binoculars for identifying steppe and water birds. Its adapted signage in Braille and QR codes for downloading audio explanations in several languages are intended for people with visual impairments.

The area surrounding Calzada de Valdunciel is characterized by a cereal pseudo-steppe landscape, which is important for the conservation of species adapted to open habitats. Wildlife observation and the historic culture of the routes therefore stand alongside each other as clearly distinct themes.

Festivals and Townscape

The Santa Elena patron saint festivities, held in honor of the patron saint of Calzada de Valdunciel, take place over several days around 18 August. They include the running of young bulls through the streets, public tastings, nighttime dances and folklore performances.

In the houses of La Armuña, carved stone surrounds frame the windows and doors; the iron grilles were made in the town's smithies.
