Cabeza del Caballo: Gorges, Bridges and Mills

The Río Uces flows through the municipality of Cabeza del Caballo. In the Arribes del Duero natural area, the Río Uces and other rivers form a network of waterways that has carved out gorges and rock escarpments up to 400 metres high.

Culture

The Puente Robleo was built in the 17th or 18th century to carry an important transport route across the narrow gorge of the Río Uces between the present-day municipalities of Cabeza del Caballo and La Zarza de Pumareda. It is made entirely of granite and has a large central round arch, with two smaller flood-relief arches on either side.

The Church of Santa María Magdalena has a single-nave body divided into three sections, a rectangular chancel and a gallery at the rear. In the traditional game of Tiro del Palancón, a heavy iron bar used for breaking up stones is thrown from a standing position; it turns slightly in the air and lands point-first. The main festival of Cabeza del Caballo takes place on the first Sunday in October in honour of the Virgen del Rosario; the Madrinas play a central role.

Nature

The Arribes del Duero Nature Park includes areas within the municipality of Cabeza del Caballo and is also designated as ZEC ES4150096 and ZEPA ES0000118. Cabeza del Caballo lies in hilly terrain with steep streets where granite is exposed; traditional buildings include small single-storey stone houses.

History

The local hike to Puente Palo and Molino de Lucas reached its 14th edition in 2026 and covered 12 kilometres over four hours along the riverbank. Molino de David was used for grinding grain; water was diverted from a small weir through a channel dug into the ground to power its machinery.

Puentepiedra can be reached from Cabeza del Caballo and lies above Molino de David on the Vegallana watercourse. The restored Molino de Lucas is regarded as one of the most important visitor attractions in Cabeza del Caballo. The route there leads over Puente Palo; when it is occasionally opened, visitors can observe the fully restored mill machinery grinding grain.
