Villar de Ciervo – Trails, Granite and Puente Quebrá

In Villar de Ciervo, hiking routes, granite architecture and the Romanesque Puente Quebrá come together.

Trails

The Camino del Fuerte connects Villar de Ciervo, Aldea del Obispo and Puerto Seguro via a hiking trail that comes together at the Puente de la Quebrá; in Villar de Ciervo, it can be started in the direction of Puente Quebrá. The GR-80 also passes through the town: the hiking and mountain-biking route connects Almeida in Portugal with Ciudad Rodrigo. The 110-kilometre, signposted route runs on foot, by bicycle or on horseback through the areas near the border. The different route lengths and means of transport make it easier to compare different plans.

When classifying the trails, two scales therefore stand side by side: the Camino del Fuerte connects several towns and places the Puente Quebrá within the route, while the GR-80 incorporates Villar de Ciervo into a longer, signposted route between Portugal and Ciudad Rodrigo. Access to the bridge, the course through the valley and the possible means of transport offer different perspectives on the trail network.

Landscape

A 4.5-kilometre trail leads from Villar de Ciervo to the three-arched Romanesque Puente Quebrá, which spans the Rivera de Dos Casas stream. The Camino del Fuerte runs through part of the Rivera de Dos Casas valley; mosaic-like sections of landscape alternate there with gently rolling terrain. The area around Puente Quebrá borders the Arribes del Duero. The specific length of the trail section and the extent of the GR-80 represent two different scales; the aforementioned means of transport complement this comparison. For personal planning, the connection between towns, the route to the individual structure and the signposted long-distance route can be considered separately.

Culture

The Ermita del Humilladero is located beside the cemetery of Villar de Ciervo; inside it is an image of Jesús Nazareno. In the town centre stands the Iglesia de San Agustín with its distinctive 18th-century granite bell tower. The town contains several examples of vernacular granite architecture. The Fuente Grande is popularly considered Roman. Beside the square near the church and town hall, two old reliefs are set into the façade of a bar: one depicts a coat of arms, while the other shows two facing heads with a chalice between them. The religious buildings, vernacular architecture, fountain and reliefs open up different cultural perspectives on the townscape. Viewing Villar de Ciervo through individual details makes it possible to distinguish its religious, architectural and figurative traces from one another.
