Vallejera De Riofrío – Walking Routes, Village Culture and Sierra de Béjar

Vallejera de Riofrío is the starting point for the Vallejera de Riofrío–La Hoya–Navacarros circular route. The seven-kilometre route forms a loop, is classified as easy, and starts and ends in Vallejera de Riofrío.

Walking Routes and Landscape

The circular route passes through chestnut forests and three municipalities in the Sierra de Béjar. Its course also offers the opportunity to experience an old Roman road.

Another circular route runs towards Fresnedoso. It is slightly more than seven kilometres long and takes approximately two and a half hours. The differing information on route length, difficulty level and duration helps you compare the two routes according to your preferred pace for the day.

Village Culture

At the entrance to the village stands the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación y San Roque, which was built at the end of the 19th century. The church has three naves and a granite bell tower.

Inside are depictions of Cristo de Vallejera, San Roque and Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación. At the foot of the church stands a stone fountain built in 1939.

Village History and Festivals

Most houses in Vallejera de Riofrío are built of stone, which insulates against cold and heat.

The municipal washhouse in Vallejera de Riofrío dates from the 19th century. It used to be a meeting place where residents washed clothes and exchanged stories from the village.

The patron saint festivals in honour of San Roque and Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación take place in mid-August. The Fiestas del Cristo de Vallejera take place on the second weekend in May.
