Navacarros – Circular Routes, Mountains and Church History

The “Navacarros–Parque Forestal de Monte Mario–Garganta del Oso” route is a moderately difficult 12 km circular tour with an approximate duration of 3 hours and 30 minutes. In the Garganta del Oso, the Barquillo River has shaped granite formations, including small cascades and pools.

The walking route through Vallejera de Riofrío, La Hoya and Navacarros is a 7 km circular route with a low level of difficulty that starts and ends in Vallejera de Riofrío. The different route lengths and difficulty levels help with an objective comparison of different hiking days.

For planning purposes, the two circular routes can be clearly distinguished from each other: the shorter route connects three places and returns to its starting point in Vallejera de Riofrío, while the longer tour, with its approximate time indication and moderate level of difficulty, describes a different time frame. The granite formations, cascades and pools add a distinctive landscape feature.

Nature

The “Subida a la estación de Esquí de La Covatilla” cycling tour is 35 km long, includes almost 1,000 metres of elevation gain and has a moderate level of physical difficulty. The “Subida a La Covatilla” cycling tour reaches the Candelario–Navacarros road, continues through Navacarros along the road to La Hoya and turns right onto a path after the Ermita de Navacarros. The “Cuerda de El Calvitero–La Ceja” route is 15 km long and is classified as mountaineering.

History

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was built on the foundations of an older church that had burned down. It was shared by Navacarros, Palomares, Vallejera de Riofrío and La Hoya. The church houses the “Libro de Becerro”, which records important religious events in the municipality from 1729 to 1889.

The path at the Puente Romano follows a small branch of the Roman road that runs through the entire municipality. The Puente Romano is located on the road connecting Navacarros with Vallejera de Riofrío.

The Ermita de El Humilladero stands at one end of Navacarros, on the former road to Ávila. It contains a carved figure of the saint as well as a crucifix with Mary Magdalene kneeling at its feet.

In Navacarros, the festival in honour of Mary Magdalene is associated with 22 July. The Fiesta del Cristo is associated with 15 September.
