San Esteban de la Sierra – Nature Trails, Culture and Sierra Landscape

Near San Esteban de la Sierra, the river is accompanied by oak and chestnut forests with a great variety of understorey species from habitats shaped by both Atlantic and Mediterranean influences. In the Sierra de Francia, dry-stone walls define terraced agricultural areas with Mediterranean crops such as grapevines, olive trees and fruit trees. The Sendero de los Miradores de las Sierras trail leads through cultivated areas and woodland before reaching a natural viewpoint with panoramic views over the Alagón Valley.

The Camino de los Trasiegos begins in San Esteban de la Sierra; after the Puente Romano, a signposted path leads onto the route. The Ruta de los Lagares Rupestres is a circular trail approximately 13 kilometres long, with a walking time of around five to six hours at a leisurely pace. It showcases wine presses carved into granite, which were used in the distant past for the first step in wine production. The approximate distance and walking time provide two factual measures for comparing routes of different lengths.

Culture and Townscape

The Ruta de los Contadores Bordados is an urban circular route through the centre of San Esteban de la Sierra featuring 48 decorated electricity meter covers, whose designs are inspired by the traditional “Bordado Popular Serrano”. The Puente de Rando was built in the 17th century using several courses of masonry from an older bridge of medieval origin; remains of an early medieval settlement have been preserved at this site, including sarcophagi carved into granite rocks. The townscape of San Esteban de la Sierra includes characteristic traditional stone buildings as well as structures with half-timbered walls. The Centro de Interpretación del Aceite displays machines and tools used in the extraction of olive oil.
