San Felices de los Gallegos – Castle, Museums and El Sendero del Aceite

San Felices de los Gallegos is home to a parish church featuring a transitional Romanesque building from the 12th and 13th centuries, which was altered during the Gothic-Renaissance period.

The medieval fortifications of San Felices de los Gallegos are protected by a castle and walls; both were built in successive construction phases. The Castillo de San Felices was built in the 13th century by the Portuguese King Don Dinis and took on its final form in the 15th century.

The Aula Histórica de San Felices de los Gallegos is located in the keep of the Castillo de San Felices. It presents the Ruta de las Fortificaciones de Frontera through signposted tours, information panels, a model of the fortifications, replicas of period weapons and interactive elements. The tour includes the dungeon of the Castillo de San Felices and an original stone staircase leading to the upper terrace. Museums and Crafts

The Museo del Aceite „Lagar del Mudo“ is housed in a former oil mill; its restoration was awarded a Europa Nostra medal in 2002. It shows the process from olives to oil, including pressing, extraction and storage. The Museo de la Cantería shows how granite is formed, the local types of granite and the quarries from which it is extracted, and pays tribute to the traditional craft of stonemasonry.

Paths and Landscape

El Sendero del Aceite is a circular trail connecting the historic ensemble of San Felices de los Gallegos with Ahigal de los Aceiteros. It is 11.4 km long and runs through gently undulating terrain with hardly any inclines; almond groves and olive trees line the route. The Parque Multiaventura de San Felices has two courses: a training course and a family multi-adventure course. El Noveno is recognised as a festival of regional tourist interest and takes place on the second weekend of May. El Noveno includes bull runs and bullfights in an arena built entirely from interlinked farm carts.
