El Maíllo – Moorland, Mill Ruins and Nature Park Routes

In El Maíllo, the Ruta Botánica Los Molinos runs entirely through the municipal area and within the Las Batuecas–Sierra de Francia Nature Park. The Ruta Botánica Accesible y Cicloturista “Los Molinos” is suitable for mountain bikes and is designed as an accessible cycling and botanical route for mountain-bike tours. Via QR codes, the route provides linked information sheets and accessible audio descriptions. It is signposted throughout with orientation posts or trail markers.

Nature

The Ruta Botánica Los Molinos offers the opportunity to observe a rare, declining peat bog ecosystem whose acidic, nutrient-poor wetlands remain waterlogged for almost the entire year. The El Maíllo peat bog is home to the carnivorous plant Drosera rotundifolia, which feeds on insects. El Maíllo is one of the places on the Iberian Peninsula with relict birch populations; specimens of downy birch (Betula pubescens) can be seen along the route. At certain points, songbirds, particularly passerines, can be observed and their calls heard.

Trails and Landscape

The Mirador Astronómico de El Maíllo was inaugurated on 15 June 2026 at the Asomadera áspera site. The route “Geología y Biología urbana por El Maíllo” is a walk through the town with four stops where quartz veins, ichnofossils, ripple marks, and relict soils from tropical climatic phases can be observed. The “Paseo medioambiental circular por la Ribera” circular route is 8.5 kilometres long and has six stops along the banks of the Morasverdes River. The route “Maravillas en El Pinalejo” has four stops along the Tenebrilla River and showcases old gold-panning sites and marine fossil structures in situ.

In the El Bardal–Corral del Tamborilero area, the “Relieve y astronomía” route runs through the landscape and offers panoramic views of the relief characteristic of the Sierra de Francia, with its inverted landforms. The El Maíllo–Peña de Francia hiking trail is 7 kilometres long and runs through the Las Batuecas–Sierra de Francia Nature Park. Culture and Events

Along the Arroyo de la Rivera, the ruins of former mills that were already in existence in the 18th century can be seen on the Ruta Botánica Los Molinos. In 2023, the parish church of Santa María Magdalena began a project to install paintings depicting the main Gospel scenes from the life of Mary Magdalene. Casa Baja de El Maíllo was built by Dominicans in the 15th century and has been protected as a listed monument since 1956. The pilgrimage from El Maíllo to El Pinalejo is associated with the first Saturday in July; El Maíllo’s patron-saint festivities with the first Sunday in October.
