Discover Sotoserrano: Rivers, Trails and Culture

Sotoserrano lies at the confluence of the Alagón, Francia and Cuerpo de Hombre rivers. The Ruta de los Tres Ríos is a circular trail that starts and ends at the Plaza Mayor in Sotoserrano. It leads to the confluences of the Francia and Cuerpo de Hombre rivers with the Río Alagón. Nature

The Ruta de los Tres Ríos passes through a variety of natural environments. The Meandro Melero, formed by the Río Alagón, lies south of Sotoserrano on the border with the province of Cáceres. It can be viewed from the Mirador de la Antigua and the Mirador de Romerosa. Forests, riverbanks and viewpoints represent different landscape features alongside one another.

Trails and Water

The Ruta de la Cepa is a 5.9-kilometre route that starts and ends in Sotoserrano. It is a circular trail running along some of Sotoserrano’s vineyards and the terraced olive groves on the slopes. At the Río Alagón in Sotoserrano, visitors can experience sections of white water, especially in spring during the snowmelt. A section of the GR-10 passes through Sotoserrano, and the Ruta cicloturista del río Alagón also runs through the town. The circular trail, long-distance hiking trail and cycling tour are different trail formats that can be compared according to activity and route.

Culture

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was built in the Romanesque style in the 13th century. The Torre del Reloj, built in the 16th century, stands on the Plaza Mayor. The Fuente Pública on Calle de La Aldea has two outlets and dates from 1791. The Ermita del Humilladero is also one of Sotoserrano’s attractions.

History

Sotoserrano was part of the Way of St. James and the Roman Vía de la Plata. Another historical story is associated with El Espolón: according to legend, during a Roman siege, an Alan village is said to have hidden its possessions there, including an 8-kilogram golden goat. It has not yet been found.
