Las Uces between Roman traces and the Río Uces

The parish church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario stands in Las Uces. An archaeological survey in the village documented four previously unpublished Latin funerary inscriptions.

Culture

The inscriptions date from the period between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD. The archaeological evidence suggests a Roman settlement in Las Uces; however, its exact form cannot be determined. The inscriptions were critically assessed in connection with the possible existence of a Romanized indigenous settlement beneath the village.

The burial finds suggest a necropolis that was very probably located in the Cortinas del Bardial area. Two of the newly documented Latin inscriptions were reused as building material in the church: one is located in the west wall, while another serves as a lintel above the southern entrance. The church façade contains embedded funerary stelae. The Fuente de los Santos next to the church is of Roman origin.

The Molino de Las Uces was converted into an ethnographic museum where visitors can learn about the region's traditional customs and ways of life. At the same time, it is a mill with a horizontal water wheel and a distinctive pentagonal design, suitable for reducing extremely high axial water pressure.

History

The auction for the construction of the stone bridge in Las Uces took place on November 27, 1887. A total of 5,453 loads of stone were transported by horse-drawn vehicles for the construction, of which Las Uces provided 4,500.

In the last quarter of the 19th century, the construction of a stone bridge in Las Uces was proposed so that the Río Uces could be crossed safely during the high water periods in winter and spring.

Landscape

The river is called the Río Uces from the reservoir immediately before the mill in the village of Las Uces. There, the Robledohermoso and Barceíno watercourses converge, and the village gives the river its name.

After forming, the Río Uces flows through Las Uces on a gentle gradient before plunging steeply between Masueco and Pereña toward its confluence with the Río Duero.

Four old bridges lie along the Río Uces: La Lastra, Puente Robledo, Puente del Ran, and Puente de Las Uces. The Rivera de Cabeza del Caballo route leads from Valsalabroso to Puente Robledo bridge along the Río Uces.
