Culture

The construction of Castillo de Miranda del Castañar is attributed to Pedro de Zúñiga. The castle’s former parade ground was later used as a bullring and is considered one of the oldest in Spain. Some buildings in Miranda del Castañar resemble the traditional Casa Mirandesa: their lower floors usually consist of dressed stone or masonry, while the upper floors rest on roughly worked wooden posts. Projecting structures form covered corridors along the streets.

Traditions

The Procesión de los Candiles is a nighttime tradition that passes through the streets of Miranda del Castañar. In 2017, it was named a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Regional by the Junta de Castilla y León. Along the route, the façades and houses are decorated with oil lamps. During the Palo dance, young people strike wooden sticks against one another to the rhythm of the gaita and tamboril.

Trails

The Miranda Medieval tour passes through the Plaza Mayor, by Castillo de Miranda del Castañar, along the city walls with their four main gates and past the Mirador de la Veleta. More than 600 metres of the medieval city walls remain; their four main gates are intact. The Mirador de la Veleta offers panoramic views of Miranda del Castañar as a fortified town.

The Paseo de Ronda tour follows the historic name for the guard’s nighttime patrol to secure the town. It leads to the city walls, old passageways between the houses and the wall gates with pointed arches.

Town tours, hiking trails and an art trail differ in subject and length and can therefore be considered alongside one another.

The Monforte de la Sierra–Miranda del Castañar hiking trail is 6.30 kilometres long and lies in the Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia Nature Park. The Camino de los Prodigios is a 10-kilometre circular hiking trail connecting Miranda del Castañar and Villanueva del Conde. It combines open-air artworks by Félix Curto, Alfredo Omaña, Marcos Rodríguez and Pablo S. Herrero with the natural surroundings of lichens, moss and trees.

Nature

The Ermita Virgen de la Cuesta stands just outside Miranda del Castañar on a hillside and can be reached through the Puerta de Nuestra Señora. It features Baroque architecture and an altarpiece from 1699, and offers views over the Sierra de Francia.
