Culture

Piedra de Villamayor is a clay-bearing sedimentary rock that is easy to cut and work and is well suited to ornamentation and sculpture. The Iglesia Parroquial de San Miguel originated from the Romanesque Ermita de San Ginés. Its present appearance was completed in 1777 under the direction of Jerónimo García de Quiñones, following renovations in the 16th and 18th centuries. A slate inscription in the church commemorates the lightning strike of 1 August 1774, known as “el centellazo”. Nature

The Los Molinos route follows the Tormes and can be completed by bicycle or on foot. The Molino de El Canto is a mill built in the 18th century that today forms a wetland with a diverse range of animal and plant life.

El Tormes piedra a piedra is a walk of approximately 3.8 kilometers along the riverbank between the Molino de la Moral and the Molino del Canto. The route combines information about the riverbank vegetation with landscape impressions connected to painting and literature.

Festivals

The Feria de la Piedra has been held since 2000 in May, during the week before the patron-saint festivities. Its week-long program honors and promotes the local natural stone and includes a sculpture competition as well as exhibitions of works and artists.

The Fiestas de Agosto take place in mid-August and include, among other activities, archery, fencing, football, board games, a soapbox race, street theater, dancing, open-air dance events and a communal meal. The Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios comprises a twelve-day program of cultural, sporting, musical and social activities.
