Nature and Trails

Santiz is home to the largest stand of cork oaks in the province of Salamanca. Along the approximately 3 km-long initial section of the circular route from Palacios del Arzobispo, the Sendero Interpretativo de los Hongos features a total of seven information panels on mycology. The Palacios del Arzobispo-Santiz circular route can be started in either town. The Ruta de los Molinos por Santiz has vertical signs and markings at intersections. Thus, when comparing the trails, different orientation elements stand side by side: one section provides information about mushrooms and artistic expression, while the other is marked at its intersections by signs and markings. The Acotado Micológico Ribera de Cañedo uses a solidarity-based, permit-based system to regulate mushroom gathering, compatible with the development of mycotourism. A tree in Santiz is part of the Ruta de las Catedrales Vivas.

Culture and History

The Museo Etnográfico de Santiz houses a collection of agricultural equipment, tools from various trades, as well as household items and everyday utensils that are no longer in use today. The museum aims to preserve the heritage of older generations in the local area and pass it on to younger people. The objects currently displayed in the Museo Etnográfico de Santiz were donated or loaned by residents of Santiz and people connected with the town. As a result, the collection includes both equipment and tools from the world of work and objects from former household and everyday life. On Teso Santo there are archaeological remains from the 6th century BC as well as from the Roman period. The church of Santiz preserves a remarkable Romanesque portal from the 12th century. The museum, Teso Santo and church portal thus represent three different historical approaches: traditional everyday culture, archaeological evidence and sacred architecture.

Festivals and Local Life

The festivities in honour of the Archangel Michael in Santiz are celebrated on 29 September. The celebrations in honour of the Archangel Michael in Santiz include a hand pelota game. On the night before Epiphany, the Quintos of Santiz hold a large bonfire in the town centre and invite those present to enjoy chorizo, grilled ribs and wine from the region.
