Cereceda de la Sierra: Oak Forests, Trails and Festivals

Cereceda de la Sierra is located in the Sierra de Francia comarca. The combination of a long-distance hiking trail, oak forests, a Romanesque church, prominent landscape features and traditional festivals gives the town several distinct facets.

Trails

The official GR-10 long-distance hiking trail runs through or across the area of Cereceda de la Sierra. On Wikiloc, hiking trails are named “Cereceda de la Sierra - Arroyomuerto” and “Cereceda de la Sierra - Cilleros de la Bastida”.

Nature

Oak forests around Cereceda de la Sierra offer opportunities for walks and other leisure activities. La Piñuela Nature Park is a dense oak forest located 1 km from the town in the direction of Béjar. As a recreational area, La Piñuela offers picnic areas, barbecue facilities, water sources and a bar. This landscape feature therefore combines forest, designated recreational areas and specific facilities without losing its character as a dense oak forest. Peña del Gato, a rock formation, is also located near the northern entrance to the town. Between the extensive oak forests around the town, the nature park in the direction of Béjar and the rock formation near the northern entrance to the town, nature can be seen at several clearly named points.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario in Cereceda de la Sierra is a Romanesque-style building. Its architecture forms part of a history that includes medieval repopulation efforts under King Alfonso IX of León at the beginning of the 13th century. The cultural references therefore extend from a specific religious building to the historical medieval repopulation efforts under a ruler identified by name.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The patronal festival in honour of Saint Paul takes place on 15 January. The patronal festival in honour of Saint Mark takes place on 25 April. A specific example of the Saint Paul festival dates from January 2017: the traditional festival in honour of Saint Paul the Hermit was celebrated with a Serrano Mass and music played on the gaita and drum. The music was performed by Ángel Rufino de Haro, who is known by the name “El Mariquelo”.

Geographical Location

The drive from Salamanca follows the CL-512 to Vecinos, continues along the SA-210 to Tamames and then follows the SA-215 for 11 km to the turn-off for Cereceda de la Sierra.
