Discover Endrinal – Holiday apartment between culture and landscape

Endrinal preserves traditional architecture characteristic of Entresierras. On the way into the village, you already cross the El Lombo Tertiary geological formation; its wetter soils support meadows with ash trees.

Landscape and trails

North of Endrinal, the landscape comprises oaks and holm oaks, while to the south there are meadows and grain fields. Near Las Pozas, a short detour of around 100 metres leads to La Chopa de las Huertas, described as a distinctive Castilian poplar.

The Ollas de la Sapa are almost spherical hollows in a rocky riverbed. They were formed by the erosion of hard pieces of rock rotated by whirlpools. The route to the Ollas passes the remains of the medieval settlement of Monte Alcaide, dating from the 6th to the 8th century AD. It follows a well-signposted track and forms part of the GR-181 “Ruta de los Caminos Históricos de Entresierras”; the section of this trail associated with the Ollas runs parallel to the course of the Alagón. The hiking stage from Endrinal to Monleón is 8.2 kilometres long and is considered accessible to all groups up to the Ermita del Mensegal; after that, some sections are more difficult.

Churches and historical traces

The built heritage includes the parish church of San Pedro, with three naves, and the 16th-century Ermita del Mensegal, with a single-nave layout. The parish church of San Pedro is said to have been built over an older building that had a crypt beneath the present-day sacristy. At the Ermita del Mensegal, Santa Isabel, rather than the Virgin Mary, is venerated.

The bullring next to the Ermita de la Virgen de El Mensegal has been documented since the 15th century and, alongside the sanctuary of El Mensegal, shows traces of a pastoral enclosure. Next to the Ermita del Humilladero lies Plaza del Herradero, formerly used for branding cattle. Endrinal’s historic bullfighting tradition is associated with the Virgen de El Mensegal, her hermitage and a spring pilgrimage.

Museums and traditional customs

The Museo Etnográfico is housed in the Casa de la Cultura Tradicional de Endrinal and presents the customary uses of a traditional home. Near the parish church of San Pedro, there is an ethnographic museum preserving agricultural equipment and tools from rural life.

Around 50 metres from the village stands the wooden potro, which was used to restrain livestock for treatment and shoeing. At Prao Cabildo, the village’s young men and children traditionally gathered on the feast day of San Blas and on the day of Hornazo to share a meal of bread.

The festivals of San Juan, San Pedro and Cristo del Humilladero include a mass, a romería, bullfighting events in Plaza del Mensegal, and traditional games such as climbing a greased pole and a competition to throw hams and pork shoulders.
