Hospital de Órbigo: Bridge, Pilgrimage Route and Medieval Festivals

A pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela still crosses the Puente Antiguo de Órbigo, a bridge dating from the 13th century. Because of the medieval dueling legend associated with it, it is known as the “Passo Honroso.” This structure thus brings together a historic transportation route, medieval tradition and the name of a local history that remains present to this day.

History and Culture

The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista was built in the mid-18th century, contains a Plateresque altarpiece and belonged to the Order of the Knights of San Juan de Jerusalén. Its construction period, furnishings and history of the order give the church several clearly distinguishable historical associations. Since 1997, the Justas Medievales del Passo Honroso have taken place on the first weekend of June; they are recognized as a festival of regional tourist interest. On Sunday, the festivities culminate in a Gran Torneo in the Palenque.

Geographical Context

The Camino Francés runs through Hospital de Órbigo along the façade of the parish church of San Juan Bautista. Hospital de Órbigo is also a stopping place on the Cañada Real de la Plata, which connects the livestock trails of Extremadura with the Leonese mountains of Babia. In addition to the pilgrimage route, a historic livestock route is therefore also part of the town’s geographical context.

The “DON SUERO” campsite is located in riverside woodland on the Órbigo River; it has 700 pitches.
