Foncebadón is located on the Camino de Santiago. The Cruz de Ferro is situated in Foncebadón. The pilgrimage route and this landmark represent two different points of connection to the town.

Pilgrimage route

Foncebadón lies on the slopes of Monte Irago. The Camino section from Rabanal to Foncebadón passes through an extensive mountain area with forests and meadows. Today’s Camino de Santiago runs from Rabanal to the entrance to Foncebadón. This makes it possible to distinguish between the named section and its specific route from the starting point to the town entrance.

Nature

An additional route is called Ruta de la Cascada de la Fervencia. It connects Foncebadón with Prao de la Molina and leads to the La Fervencia waterfall. Near Foncebadón, there are channels on the slopes that begin at the Cruz de Hierro and are connected with Roman mining. Ponds are still in use in Foncebadón.

The mountains in the broader regional surroundings of Foncebadón include Pico Teleno and El Teleno. The Cruz Mayor summit is also located in this broader regional area. The landscape can therefore be classified according to the slopes around the town, the route section through the mountain area and the summits in the broader regional surroundings.

History and culture

A reproduction from 1976 stands at the Cruz de Ferro; the original is on display at the Museo de los Caminos de Astorga. The hermit Gaucelmo founded a pilgrims’ hospital in Foncebadón between the 11th and 12th centuries. The presence of a monastery in Foncebadón contributed to the town’s historical importance several centuries ago.

In the 10th century, the Leonese King Ramiro II convened a council in Foncebadón. Historically, Foncebadón had the parish church of Santa María Magdalena. These historical references range from the 10th century, through the pilgrims’ hospital between the 11th and 12th centuries, to the reproduction at the Cruz de Ferro from 1976.

The broader regional surroundings of Foncebadón are home to the Museo del Bierzo, the Museo de la Radio, Castillo De Los Templarios and the Museo del Ferrocarril. The Parque de Gil y Carrasco "El Plantío" is also located in the broader regional surroundings of Foncebadón.
