Culture

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción stands on a small hill. Its thick walls and buttresses give it the appearance of a fortress and make the church a striking feature of the townscape.

The building of the former Paúles seminary dates back to the aristocratic palace of the Santo Domingo family, built in the 16th century. The Padres Paúles converted the former seminary into a respected theological seminary, which shaped the region’s cultural and religious life for much of the 20th century.

History

The archaeological site of Deobrígula is mentioned by Ptolemy and in the Itinerarium Antonini as a mansio on Roman routes 32 and 34. The name thus connects the site with a documented station in the history of the Roman roads.

A pilgrim cross stands at the entrance to Tardajos. The stone signpost of the Way of Saint James dates from 1703 and has been restored.

A former pilgrims’ hospital is associated with Tardajos. In 1182, Countess Doña Mayor transferred the rights to this pilgrims’ hostel to the Diocese of Burgos.
