Aranda de Duero: Discover Underground Wine Cellars and Museums

In the historic centre of Aranda de Duero, the Conjunto de Bodegas subterráneas de Aranda comprises more than seven kilometres of underground galleries that were used for wine production. Since 2015, the complex has been protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of Conjunto Etnológico. The Centro de Interpretación de la Arquitectura del Vino (CIAVIN) is located in the remains of a building constructed in the 18th century and presents the historical heritage of wine culture and Aranda de Duero’s medieval underground wine cellars. The CIAVIN houses a model of Aranda de Duero from 1503, based on the 1503 town plan, which is considered the oldest perspective town plan in Spain.

Wine and Culture

The Bodega de Las Caballerizas offers, among other things, guided tours with theatrical elements focusing on its history, architecture and wine culture. The bodega also has an alternative accessible entrance via the Paseo del río Bañuelos and the Vereda Chano Lobato. At the wine sites, historical spaces, architecture and interpretation are therefore presented alongside one another in different forms.

Art and Sacred History

The Museo de Pintura – Casa de las Bolas houses 100 lithographs by Salvador Dalí, created to illustrate a special edition of Dante’s Divine Comedy. It also houses the art collection donated by Don Félix Cañada Guerrero (1925–2023); the works on display date from the 17th to the 20th century. The Museo de Arte Sacro de la Iglesia de San Juan features a Hispano-Flemish altarpiece in the Capilla de las Calderonas, as well as reliefs from the former high altar dating from the early 16th century, created by the workshop of Felipe Vigarny.

The Museo del Tren is located in the former Chelva railway station, which opened in 1895 on the Valladolid–Ariza railway line. The Museo de Cerámica reflects Aranda de Duero’s significant pottery tradition and displays traditional pieces from Aranda de Duero, various provinces of Castilla y León and the rest of Spain. The Museo de Juegos Tradicionales on Plaza Mayor presents numerous games from around the world and historical children’s toys in a permanent exhibition. The themes thus range from railway history and ceramics to games and childhood culture.
