La Rad: Nature, Hiking Trails and History

La Rad lies within the Hoces del Alto Ebro y Rudrón Natural Park and combines natural surroundings, trails and a multifaceted local history. Between spring areas, gorges, mountains and historical traces, it offers a destination whose distinctive features can be explored from different perspectives.

Nature

Three named spring areas lie in the surroundings of La Rad: the Manantial de Ontinente, the Fuente del Olmo and the Fuente de Lanchares. Each of these natural destinations has its own name and belongs to the immediate surroundings of the village. The Monte Bigüenzo mountain is also located in the wider regional area around La Rad. The landscape therefore extends from the springs in the vicinity to a mountain destination in the broader regional area.

Hiking

Several trails lead from La Rad in different directions and through different types of landscape. One hiking route descends from the La Rad plateau into the deepest gorge of the Cañón del Rudrón near Santa Coloma del Rudrón. A well-marked hiking trail beside the church of La Rad leads to the edge of Monte de la Berzosa. Both routes connect the village with a clearly described destination, but differ in that one crosses a plateau while the other leads to the edge of a mountain.

Within the Hoces del Alto Ebro y Rudrón natural area, another trail leads from La Rad to Trashaedo. A further hiking route connects La Rad with Basconcillos del Tozo and is rated as moderately difficult. The destinations and rating mentioned provide different points of reference when choosing a route: a gorge, mountain, neighboring village and difficulty level each represent a distinct type of tour.

History and Local Character

La Rad is historically documented in a written document dating from 1075. Another piece of historical information belongs to local tradition: according to tradition, La Horca at the highest point of La Rad is associated with the execution of death sentences. The dated documentary reference and the story of La Horca thus stand side by side as different approaches to the village's past.

Agriculture is also part of the village's traditional history. Historically, La Rad's agricultural produce included wheat, rye, barley, vetches, pulses and potatoes.
