Buniel lies in the fertile, agriculturally used plain of the Arlanzón. The village brings together several clearly distinguishable traces: the Barrio de Bodegas and the parish church of Santa María are at its centre, while the Roman villa of Molino de Arriba provides an archaeological accent. Culture

In the centre of Buniel, near the parish church and the town hall, lies the Barrio de Bodegas. It consists of partly underground structures with stone façades and underground galleries excavated into rock or clay-rich soil. The Barrio de Bodegas is regarded as a living testimony to traditional practices of rural self-sufficiency. Most of the bodegas in the Barrio de Bodegas de Buniel are now closed and are not part of an organised tourist tour.

The parish church of Santa María in Buniel houses a small museum. The Church of Santa María has a Latin-cross floor plan, three vaulted naves and stone columns. Two different cultural forms stand side by side in the same place: the museum is located in the church, while the church's spatial form derives its architectural impact from its floor plan, vaults and columns.

Archaeology

The Roman past includes the villa of Molino de Arriba. It comprises two hypocausts and a possible oecus. The Roman villa of Molino de Arriba also has four mosaic floors, three of which feature geometric designs. The excavated remains have been covered with geotextile and a protective layer of fill. Thus, at the villa, technical building elements, a possible representative room, mosaic designs and the present-day protection of the excavation come together without these aspects merging into a single impression.

The villa is located about 400 metres from the left bank of the Arlanzón on a floodplain. Its location adds a distinct geographical connection to the archaeological details: the building complex is not only part of the Roman past, but is also linked to the river landscape of the Arlanzón.

Buniel lies about 12 kilometres west of Burgos and is well connected via the N-620a and the A-62, as well as by the nearby high-speed railway. In Tardajos, five kilometres from Buniel, the “Footprints of Saint Teresa of Jesús” route runs through the area.
