Ibeas de Juarros – Atapuerca, the Way of St. James and Alubias rojas

The CAYAC in Ibeas de Juarros features a permanent exhibition entitled “La Sierra de Atapuerca, patrimonio natural y cultural”. The archaeological sites of the Sierra de Atapuerca were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.

Culture

The CAYAC is located on the outskirts of Ibeas de Juarros on the N-120, at kilometre 97 on the route from Burgos to Logroño. It serves as a meeting point for visitors and as the departure point for coaches travelling to the archaeological sites of Atapuerca. Guided tours of these sites also depart from the CAYAC and are conducted by coach.

The Aula Emiliano Aguirre in Ibeas de Juarros houses a permanent exhibition featuring images, texts, original artefacts and reproductions of stone tools and bones from the Atapuerca sites. The Fundación Atapuerca is based in Ibeas de Juarros and organises visits to the archaeological sites and the associated facilities. It was founded in 1999 to support the scientific research project on human evolution, the Proyecto Atapuerca.

History

The earliest known written evidence of Ibeas de Juarros dates back to 921. Near the village, remains of the Monasterio de San Cristóbal de Ibeas have been preserved beside the San Millán cemetery.

The Iglesia de San Martín Obispo was built at the end of the 15th century and reflects the transition from Romanesque architecture to Cistercian Gothic. Its Baroque tower was added in 1652. The Iglesia de San Martín in Ibeas de Juarros is also connected with the Camino de Santiago.

The Cruz de Canto is designated as a sculptural boundary marker between the former Kingdom of Navarre and the Kingdom of Castile. The sculpture was made from a single block of limestone and bears a mutilated lauburu on a pedestal.

Trails and landscape

The Way of St. James passes through Ibeas de Juarros, following the route of the N-120. The municipality and its surroundings also offer the Ruta del Ferrocarril as a tourist route, as well as the long-distance GR-82 trail. The different types of routes can be considered separately for your own planning, giving each day a different thematic focus.

A viewpoint south of Ibeas de Juarros, on the other side of the river, offers views of the municipality and the Sierra de Atapuerca.

Regional cuisine

Alubias rojas de Ibeas are traditionally grown on the banks of the Arlanzón River. They are used to prepare the traditional olla podrida; at Los Claveles, this dish is one of the restaurant’s signature dishes. The Feria de la Alubia takes place at the beginning of November.

From Ibeas de Juarros, you can also visit the only watermill on the Arlanzón River that is still in operation.
