Cuevas De San Clemente – Discover Nature Trails and Culture

Part of the municipality of Cuevas De San Clemente lies within the protected natural area of the relict juniper groves of the Arlanza Valley. The landscape combines juniper groves, trails and cultural sites, offering different ways to experience a stay: short walks, longer circular routes and visits to sights can each be considered as distinct focal points.

Nature and Hiking Trails

The official short-distance hiking trail PRC-BU 216, “Sendero de San Clemente”, is 9.4 km long. As a circular route, it starts and ends in Cuevas De San Clemente, passes through the natural landscapes of the Sabinares del Arlanza and offers opportunities to observe flora and fauna as well as birds. Its route thus connects the village directly with the named landscape and makes the trail a comprehensive way to explore the surrounding area on foot.

The Senda del Risco Verde is an easy 1.5 km hiking trail. The Senda Puente de San Marcos is also an easy 1 km hiking trail. Both trails contrast clearly with the 9.4-kilometre circular route: they are shorter, remain classified as easy and thus offer a different way of walking through the landscape.

The Canteras de Hontoria hiking route begins in Cuevas De San Clemente, passes through holm oak groves to the Cueva y Fuente de San Clemente and continues to numerous old, abandoned open-pit quarries. Its distinctive character comes from the succession of wooded sections, a spring with a cave and traces of earlier stone extraction. It thus complements the trails through the Sabinares del Arlanza with a route featuring several clearly named landscape elements.

Geographical Setting

Cuevas De San Clemente is located on the edge of the Burgos–Soria road. This geographical reference complements the information about the individual trails and describes the location of the village independently of the respective hiking routes.

There are wooden tables at the Fuente Vieja; the site is suitable for walking or relaxing. Thus, in addition to the signposted trails, a specific place in the village is also among the described options for a more leisurely break.

Culture

The parish church of San Miguel Arcángel in Cuevas De San Clemente contains a Romanesque baptismal font, the only medieval liturgical furnishing of the site to have survived to the present day. It therefore represents a single, still-preserved element of the local religious heritage and complements the impressions of the landscape with a historic interior.

Since December 2017, Cuevas De San Clemente has been home to the permanent exhibition “Modesto Ciruelos: Orígenes y Destinos”. Modesto Ciruelos was born in Cuevas De San Clemente in 1908. The exhibition and this biographical connection also anchor modern cultural history in the municipality.
