Nature and landscape

The Río San Miguel flows through Mamolar from east to west and rises there. Mamolar lies in the shadow of Peña Agulla, whose elevation is given as 1,381 metres. The municipality includes almost 800 hectares of pine forest, consisting mainly of Scots pine and partly of resin pine. Junipers are found in the municipality; the Sabinares del Arlanza area is associated with these occurrences.

The forest of Mamolar is considered rich in mushrooms, including Níscalos, porcini mushrooms, Mansarones, Babosillas and Capuchinos. The wider surrounding region includes the rocky limestone cliffs in the La Yecla y Sabinares del Arlanza area. They provide a habitat for birds of prey, including around one hundred pairs of griffon vultures. The deep, narrow La Yecla gorge, cut into limestone, is also located in the wider surrounding region and can be explored on foot via bridges and suspension bridges.

Culture and history

The parish church of Mamolar is dedicated to Santa Centola and is one of the town’s sights. The Ermita de Santiago chapel stands at the entrance to Mamolar. During the annual Pingada del Mayo, a pine trunk is raised by hand beside the Santa Centola church.

The name Mamolar is associated with the rocky formation of the area and a mountain shaped like a millstone; this interpretation is recorded in a manuscript from the Santo Domingo de Silos monastery dating from 1171. Mamolar was known in the comarca as the “village of carpenters”; the local craftsmen specialised in making stairs and doors.

The first settlers to repopulate the area presumably came to Mamolar during the Christian Reconquista in the 10th century. The Fiesta de la Matanza is celebrated in Mamolar in December.
