Masa – Páramo Landscape and Historic Church

On the “Tierras rojas y blancas” route, you reach Masa after crossing the Hoz de San Martín de Ubierna and a mountain pass. Another route leads into the Páramo de Masa area, climbs gently to a pass and then continues in the direction of Masa. Geographical setting

Masa lies in the Páramo de Masa at an altitude of 1,006 metres. The Páramo de Masa is extensive, flat and cold. The Río Ubierna rises in the Páramo de Masa. For your own orientation, you can consider the elevation, landform and river source as separate geographical reference points.

Nature

Karst formations have created sinkholes and uvalas in parts of the Páramo de Masa. Sparse scrubland consisting of heather, thyme and bearberry grows on the Páramo de Masa. Small stands of holm oak and Pyrenean oak can also be found there. At the beginning of spring, the plain around Masa displays a great variety of orchids. The Páramo de Masa is also home to various steppe birds, including spectacled warblers, calandra larks, short-toed larks, little bustards and stone-curlews. Culture

In Masa, the house where General Wellington spent the night on his return after the Battle of Salamanca is still preserved. The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción stands in the heart of Masa. Its main nave is Gothic; the polygonal chancel and buttresses date from the 14th and 15th centuries. A side aisle with a square chancel was added between the 16th and 17th centuries. The Renaissance high altar dates from the 16th century and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The furnishings also include a historic clock. Nuestra Señora de la Asunción continues to be an active place of worship.
