San Millán de San Zadornil: Nature, Trails and History

San Millán de San Zadornil is one of the villages in the Montes Obarenes-San Zadornil Nature Park. The character of the destination cannot be understood through a single theme. The San Millán de San Zadornil trail leads through a holm oak forest up to the 932-metre-high Alto de Terreros. Monte Terreros is characterised by holm oak forest, through which a local hiking trail runs. From some points along the San Millán de San Zadornil trail, Valpuesta and its collegiate church can be seen. The high point gives the trail a clearly named destination and complements the landscape impression with a view of neighbouring Valpuesta.

Trails and Activities

Stage 8, “San Millán de San Zadornil–Espejo”, begins in San Millán de San Zadornil. It follows the Omecillo River, which has been designated a Site of Community Importance because of its high ecological value. In San Millán de San Zadornil, it crosses the BU-553 road. The stage is suitable for cycling except for a steep section approximately half a kilometre long at the exit from Valpuesta. The forest trail to Alto de Terreros and the stage along the Omecillo focus on different features: the former on a high point and holm oak forest, the latter on a river course and a cycling section.

The named routes differ in their function and in the level of detail described. A specific route, an activity option and the historical points of reference thus offer different ways of experiencing San Millán de San Zadornil. History and Culture

San Millán de San Zadornil was the scene of fighting during the Spanish War of Independence. The Church of San Millán Abad in San Millán de San Zadornil preserves a medieval chancel in the late Romanesque style. Outside San Millán de San Zadornil there is a small humilladero, also known as the Capilla de las Ánimas, which welcomes travellers. San Millán de San Zadornil had two grain mills that were used by the inhabitants of Villamardones, Lahoz and Lalastra to grind wheat. Thus, the historical perspective ranges from wartime events and medieval religious art to the former use of the mills.
