Pradoluengo: Discover its textile heritage, hiking trails and festivals

Pradoluengo’s textile heritage dates back more than 500 years and includes spinning mills, fulling mills, dye works and machinery from various periods. Early textile production focused on cloth and bayetas, while later manufacturing concentrated on knitwear such as berets and socks.

Culture

The Church of Santa María de la Asunción has medieval origins; the current building mainly dates from alterations and extensions carried out between the 16th and 18th centuries. The present Ermita de San Roque was rebuilt in the 19th century and is the third building erected on this site.

The Indian houses and palaces of Pradoluengo are scattered across different parts of the municipality and are particularly concentrated along the street known as “Acera de los ricos”.

Nature and trails

The Sierra de la Demanda extends through Burgos and La Rioja and includes Pico San Millán, the highest peak in the province of Burgos. Above Pradoluengo, the Río Oropesa flows through a narrow, deeply incised valley in the Sierra de la Demanda; the higher slopes are covered by a valuable, well-preserved beech forest.

The Senda de los Batanes is a 3-kilometre walking route with a duration of 40 minutes and a low difficulty level. The El Nacedero del río Oropesa route is listed as 14.2 kilometres long, with a duration of four hours and a low to moderate difficulty level; it begins at the market in Pradoluengo and follows the Río Oropesa upstream, parallel to the river, to the beech forests around El Nacedero below Cumbre del Remendia.

The Desfiladero de Garganchón or del río Urbión route is listed as 8.3 kilometres long, with a duration of three hours and a moderate difficulty level. The route to Pico San Millán in the vicinity of Pradoluengo covers 25 kilometres, takes nine hours and is listed as having a high difficulty level.

Bosque calcetín is a route that can be walked from Acebal Vizcarra in Pradoluengo. Senda de la Muñeca is a circular route that descends to Pradoluengo through Monte Largo, a reforested stand of black pine with groups of rowan trees, birches, holly trees and individual Norway spruce.

Festivals and cuisine

The traditional Fiesta de la Matanza takes place in Pradoluengo at the end of February. Products are prepared by hand, including the typical tortas con chicharrones, and tastings are offered to attendees. Remembranza, Pradoluengo’s Feria Indiana, takes place on the last weekend of July.

The Encuentro Internacional de Malabares has been held in Pradoluengo for more than 15 years over a weekend and includes circus performances, workshops, concerts and batucadas. The patron saint festivals are dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption and Saint Roch and take place from 14 to 20 August.

The Fiestas de Gracias take place on the second weekend of September as a continuation of the patron saint festivals. The Good Friday procession includes six sculptural groups and other living tableaux depicting the key moments of the Passion of Jesus.
