Villarcayo lies on the banks of the Nela River. Its riverside location provides a clear starting point for exploring a place where nature, outdoor activities, the townscape and seasonal events can be considered from different perspectives. Which of these aspects you explore first is up to your travel plans.

Nature and Trails

The El Soto park complex lies on the banks of the Nela and is a large natural area with bathing areas. The BTT Sendas de Castilla la Vieja route begins in the spacious, green El Soto de Villarcayo park. Villarcayo offers a municipal public bicycle rental service. The Red de Senderos de Pequeño Recorrido de Villarcayo (PRC) hiking network comprises seven circular hiking trails approved by the Federación de Montaña, Escalada y Senderismo de Castilla y León.

The various types of activity do not have to be combined into a single day programme; you can organise your preferred focus between water activities, cycling and hiking.

Culture and Townscape

The town is home to an outstanding museum of sacred art. The town hall, the Casa Consistorial on the Plaza Mayor, was built in 1891. The Torre del Reloj dates from the 16th century. The Plaza Mayor and the town hall form a rural urban ensemble typical of northern Castile. The entire town of Villarcayo was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural on 19 June 2007 in the category “Conjunto Histórico”. The Junta de Castilla y León has recognised La Guinda as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Regional.

The cultural information can be organised by art, architectural history and townscape, allowing you to consider each focus separately.

For a holiday apartment in Villarcayo, you can check travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions side by side on the respective listing page. These three details support a clear comparison when you consider the period, the desired room layout and the flexibility of a booking separately.

The calendar and activities can be viewed as two different planning dimensions; you can first choose your preferred pace and then consider a date.

Annual Cycle and Local Events

Since 1571, Villarcayo has held the privilege of hosting a weekly market every Monday. On the evening of 17 July, the Fiesta de la Guinda y Santa Marina takes place. In August, specifically on 15 and 16 August, Villarcayo celebrates the patronal festivities in honour of Our Lady and Saint Roch, the Fiestas de San Roque. The Concurso Nacional de Saltos takes place in the last week of August. In December, Villarcayo hosts the Concurso de Pucheras.
