Valdelateja: Gorges, Hiking Trails and Cultural Heritage

Valdelateja lies at the confluence of the Rudrón and the Ebro, within the Parque Natural de las Hoces del Alto Ebro y Rudrón.

Nature

The Hoces entre Orbaneja y Pesquera route passes through beech forests, mixed oak forests and low-growing oak stands. The Cañón del Ebro route runs through a limestone gorge with rock walls up to 250 metres high; the landscape combines remarkable biodiversity with hiking trails. Castrosiero is a blunt-pyramidal limestone rock rising approximately 200 metres above the Rudrón. Different trail and landscape features can be considered separately when planning.

Hiking Trails

The San Felices–Valdelateja section is 10.7 kilometres long; for the outward journey, the route through the valley is recommended, and for the return journey, the path across the high plateau. The official route includes the 1-kilometre climb to the Ermita de las Santas Centola y Elena, with views over the Rudrón Valley and the abandoned meander of Valdelateja. The southern variant of the Hoces entre Orbaneja y Pesquera route passes through Valdelateja.

The Cañón del Ebro route begins in Valdelateja; at the starting point, the Rudrón is crossed on a stone bridge, while the parish church marks the beginning of the trail. The return route of the Castrosiero trail descends to Valdelateja along a medieval, paved path and crosses the Rudrón on the village's stone bridge. From the highest point of the Castrosiero trail, there is a view of the abandoned meander of the Rudrón.

This places various landscapes and trail situations side by side: valley sections, high plateau, gorge, stone bridge and the paved descent are among the named features. The distances also differ significantly: the 10.7-kilometre section contrasts with the 1-kilometre climb to the Ermita. This makes it possible to classify the routes separately by length, terrain and course.

Culture

The traditional montañés architecture of Valdelateja comprises two-storey stone houses with gabled roofs and continuous wooden balconies. The Ermita de las Santas Centola y Elena on Castrosiero is a late Visigothic religious building dating from the late 8th century. Two early medieval liturgical objects found inside the Ermita de Santa Centola y Elena are now housed in the Museo Arqueológico de Burgos. The Ermita de Santa Centola y Elena stands on a high plateau and offers views over the gorge formed by the Rudrón and Ebro rivers.
