Cigüenza: Cultural Heritage, Trails and the Río Nela River Landscape

Culture and History

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Tabla stands on a hill with panoramic views over the Merindad de Castilla La Vieja. Below the hermitage lies a compact townscape with closely packed houses.

The traditional townscape of Cigüenza displays features of the regional mountain house type. The traditional houses have rectangular floor plans, hipped roofs and symmetrical façades.

The Tumbas de San Andrés necropolis lies behind the railway line from Cigüenza on a sandstone platform. At the Tumbas, 20 tub-shaped and anthropomorphic graves, mostly for children, are visible. Based on their morphology, the graves are dated to the period between the 8th and 9th centuries.

The necropolis can be reached via the BU-561 road towards Puentedey. The access path crosses the railway line and heads towards Villalaín. At the fork, the left-hand branch leads to the property where the Tumbas de San Andrés necropolis is located.

The former convent of Santa Dorotea in Cigüenza has been documented since 959. In the wider regional area, the Museo de Burgos preserves surviving evidence of the vanished Santa Dorotea de Cigüenza convent.

The patron saint's festival of Nuestra Señora de la Tabla is associated with 9 September.

Nature

In Cigüenza, the Río Nela forms a local riverside area known as “Trancos”. In the wider regional area around Cigüenza, the riverside zone of the Río Nela has been included in the Natura 2000 network as a Site of Community Importance because of its natural values.

Trails and Historic Routes

South of Cigüenza, the former Santander-Mediterráneo railway line has been converted into a Camino Natural. One stage of the Camino Natural Santander-Mediterráneo reaches Cigüenza at kilometre 18.

The PRC-BU 225 La Canaleja route follows old roads and paths. It illustrates historic travel conditions from a time without roads, when crossing river valleys was particularly difficult.
