Village Character and Architectural Heritage

The church of El Barrio is located at the highest point of the village, at the end of Calle Altozano. The buildings are predominantly made of local rubble stone; dressed stone is used at building corners and around window and door openings.

Above the single-piece door lintel of the Palacio de la calle del Sol, the year 1699 is displayed beneath a coat of arms. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Las Angustias is also located in El Barrio. Its main chapel has a roof structure similar to that of the church.

Nuestra Señora de la Concepción is a single-nave church made of dressed stone with rubble-stone surfaces and only a few ornaments, limited to the usual elements. The chancel area contains a vault with lunettes.

The settlement pattern shows a clear relationship between urban and natural space. Particularly on the eastern and southern sides, stone-built village edges form a façade facing the mountainside or valley.

The outer paths give the built fabric a circular boundary. At the same time, the streets display pronounced irregularities, with bends, changes of direction, angled recesses and dead ends. The intersection of Travesía Chorrillo, Calle Altozano and Calle Sol appears to structure the entire village; it is a very irregular yet very beautiful meeting place.

Next to the church stands a stone fountain with a livestock trough made of large granite blocks. Its spout, separated from the water basin, allows people to drink. A one-metre-high statue of the Virgen de Guadalupe, donated by Santiago de Santiago, was blessed on the occasion of the Feast of Saint Bartholomew and is intended to be placed in the church of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción in the El Barrio district.

Landscape and Paths

The surroundings of El Barrio consist of scrubland and wooded areas that rise and become denser towards the south. Due to the orography, numerous watercourses flow northwards towards the valley.

On the hiking route from El Barrio to Casa del Cabrero, there are views of the Sierra de Villafranca from the Cabrero hut. The PR-AV 55 Navares de Bardal hiking trail is a 4.8-kilometre, two-hour traverse of moderate difficulty from San Miguel de Corneja to El Barrio.

El Barrio is the last village on the road from Navaescurial; the road ends there.
