Culture and Townscape

In the old town of Cuevas del Valle, Calle Real, Calle del Ayuntamiento Viejo, and Calle de los Soportales preserve traditional architecture. The traditional houses feature granite masonry, timber-and-brick half-timbering, projecting wooden balconies, and large roof overhangs. The church of Iglesia de la Natividad de Nuestra Señora in Cuevas del Valle dates back to the 15th century.

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Puerto o de las Angustias was built in 1637 and has an altar clad in ceramic tiles from Talavera. The Ermita de San Antonio Abad stands at the foot of Puerto del Pico, at the beginning of the Roman road, and has a brick altarpiece. The bullring in Cuevas del Valle is a rectangular structure with stone enclosures and tiered rows of seats. The Rollo, also known as the Picota, of Cuevas del Valle symbolizes the legal and administrative independence of the Señorío de Mombeltrán, granted by Charles II in 1695.

Traditions and Events

The Fiesta Trashumancia commemorates the passage of livestock through Cuevas del Valle along the Roman road. During the festival, cattle, sheep, and foals belonging to various local livestock owners arrive after the procession along Calle Real; a shearing demonstration is also held. The MTB-Cueva-del-Valle cycling tour takes place every year and follows various tracks and paths in the municipality. The Subida al Puerto El Pico por la Calzada Romana running event takes place on the first weekend in August. Mycological days are held in Cuevas del Valle every year together with the Sociedad Micológica Amagredos.

Traditional dishes from Cuevas del Valle include patatas revolconas, migas, cabrito, and carillas. Traditional sweets include flores, mantecados, rosquillas, and hornazos, which are typical of Semana Santa.
