Valga: Bridges, Routes and History

The medieval stone bridge Ponte do Souto spans the Valga River and forms part of the Camiño Real de Santiago. The former Camiño Real mainly ran as a trade route parallel to the banks of the Ulla in the province of Pontevedra towards Vilagarcía. The Ponte do Souto in Campaña bears witness to its historic route through Valga.

History and Routes

The Vía Mariana, also known as the Luso Galaica, is a religious route between Marian sanctuaries. In Valga, it passes close to the Capela dos Martores and the Pedra da Serpe petroglyph. Mar de Santiago is a maritime and fluvial route formed by Vilanova de Arousa, Catoira, Valga and Pontecesures. Historic routes and religious trails therefore stand alongside a connection that brings together maritime and fluvial sections.

Nature and Water

Lagoa da Mina Mercedes covers approximately 30,000 m² and is almost 20 metres deep in its central area. The Miradoiro do Monte Beiro offers a panoramic view over the Ulla Valley.

Parque Irmáns Dios Mosquera has a recreational area with a river beach, children's playground, walking path, bridges, picnic areas and car parks. Valga Verde is a municipal network of sites of natural, scenic and educational interest.

The route to the Fervenzas de Raxoi e Parafita includes an approximately 500-metre footpath through dense riverside woodland to a restored mill and a wooden footbridge. Monte Albor is an area surrounded by bodies of water and old mills that connects visitors with nature. Culture and Crafts

The first floor of the Museo de la Historia de Valga presents the history of Valga from the first settlers to the present day. The Belén Artesanal en Movemento is located at Rúa Nova s/n in Campaña, Valga (Pontevedra), 36645.

The Belén Artesanal en Movemento comprises approximately 3,000 or slightly more pieces, many of which are movable. The figures and the other decorative elements are handmade by members of the Asociación Amigos do Belén. The combination of movable parts and handmade elements defines the distinctive character of this exhibition.

Festivals and Regional Products

The Festa da Anguía has been held in Valga since 1989 and showcases culinary preparations of eel from the Ulla River. The Mostra da Caña do País presents traditional spirits produced in Valga's parishes by distilling grape pomace.
