Discover Cambados: Culture, Albariño and Holiday Apartments

Cambados brings together historic buildings, wine traditions, museums and coastal routes. The Fiesta del Albariño has been held here annually since 1953. This festival includes public wine tastings at A Calzada.

Culture

In the historic Fefiñáns district, a monumental square forms the centre of the district. The Pazo de Fefiñáns, an arched bridge, the Torre del Homenaje and the Church of San Benito border this square. The Pazo de Fefiñáns is a Renaissance-style building. In November 2001, Cambados was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural.

The ruins of Santa Mariña de Dozo combine original Romanesque, maritime Gothic and Renaissance elements. The remains of Santa Mariña de Dozo were declared a national monument in 1943. Another historic building is the Torre de San Sadurniño. It also served as a lighthouse and helped friendly ships reach the harbour safely.

Museums

At the Casa Museo Ramón Cabanillas, the writer’s personal belongings are displayed alongside photographs. The exhibits also include a reconstructed study. First editions of the writer’s works are also displayed at the Casa Museo.

Visits to the Museo Etnográfico e do Viño are available by appointment. The Museo Molino de Mareas de A Seca explains what historic tide mills are and also how these mills work. Thus, both the name of this type of mill and its technical operation are part of the information presented there.

As the tide went out, the Molino de Mareas de A Seca mill used water retained at high tide. Its four millstones were powered by this water. The operation therefore linked the change of tide with the power required for milling.

Wine and Cuisine

Cambados offers a hands-on cooking workshop. Participants prepare recipes using regional products. The preparation takes place under the guidance and supervision of a professional chef. The activity therefore combines regional products with guided preparation.

Collecting scallops is permitted in Cambados. There is a dedicated festival for this local speciality. The scallop is therefore represented both as a permitted local activity and as the subject of its own festival tradition.

Routes

Cambados is part of the maritime and fluvial Ruta Traslatio. It is also known as the Ruta Xacobea del Mar de Arousa y Río Ulla. The route commemorates the arrival of the mortal remains of the Apostle James in a boat.

The Ruta del Padre Sarmiento is 190 kilometres long. As a coastal route, it runs through the coastal region. Cambados is one of its significant waypoints. The route thus combines its specified length with the coastal course and the Cambados waypoint.
