Boborás – Bridges, Wine and Hiking Trails in Galicia

History and Architectural Heritage

Pazos de Arenteiro represents the historical side of Boborás. The first documented mention of Pazos de Arenteiro dates back to 1158. Two bridges of medieval origin form part of the local landscape. One old bridge preserves a carefully crafted arch from an original set of four arches. Metal structures and wooden decking were added to the old foundations, thus combining the historic construction with later renovations.

The Romanesque church Igrexa de San Mamede de Moldes is also part of the architectural heritage. It dates from the late 12th or early 13th century. The bridges and the religious building lead through different chapters of medieval architecture: while the bridges reveal the combination of river crossing and craftsmanship, the church places the emphasis on the Romanesque formal language.

Tradition and Wine

The Danza de Xuvencos is a religious cultural expression and, at the same time, a centuries-old tradition kept alive in Xuvencos. Another historical connection leads to the Adega de Tombelo winery. In the 16th century, it was owned by the Commandery of San Xoán de Xerusalén de Pazos de Arenteiro. Pazo Tizón houses a winery affiliated with the Ribeiro designation of origin.

An environmental walking route established by the Concello de Boborás ends at the medieval wine cellars of Tumbelo. The references to wine thus bring together a religious tradition, the history of a winery and a section of the route whose destination is the historic cellars. For those interested in culture, customs, architectural history and winegrowing are combined in this way at named sites.

Hiking Trails and River Landscape

There are currently six active hiking trails listed in the Concello de Boborás. The Senda do Arenteiro hiking trail passes the ruins of Castro Cavadoso Castle. The ruins are located next to the bridge of the same name on the Arenteiro River. The PR-G 77 Senda de Boborás hiking trail ends in Pazos de Arenteiro in the Concello de Boborás. The two trails therefore identify different destinations and historical sites: one features a castle, bridge and river, while the other leads to Pazos de Arenteiro.

A separate landscape feature is the Aguas Termais de Brués spring. It lies five metres from the Viñao River. When planning a route involving hiking trails and named landscape features, current route conditions can be checked before departure.

Transport and Other Places

The N-541 is the most important road connection from Boborás between Ourense and Pontevedra. Bus stops in the municipality are listed in A Almuzara, Astureses, Boborás, Brués, Moreiras, Nogueira, Ventosa, Xendive and Xurenzás. For travelling by public transport, the listed stops and current timetables can be checked against each other before the journey.
