Astureses: Galician Romanesque and the Saleta Chapel

The Church of San Xulián de Astureses is an outstanding example of Galician Romanesque architecture.

It was founded in the 12th century by the Templars. It preserves a Romanesque structure with a single nave and a semicircular apse. It thus combines a clearly dated history with a distinctly described architectural form.

The traditional Romaría da Saleta is celebrated in the Chapel of Nosa Señora da Saleta. The municipality’s festival calendar lists the feast in honour of the Virgin of La Saleta in Astureses on 19 September. The celebration and the calendar entry are therefore among the named religious traditions of the place.

Culture

The Cruceiro na Saleta stands in the area of the Chapel of da Saleta. The stone cross is situated on a rock.

The second mill among the mills on the River Pedriña has a millstone. This mill is in a state of complete disrepair. The millstone points to the building’s former function, while the complete disrepair describes its current condition.

The Pombal Astureses is a round building. Its walls consist of plastered rubble stone. The roof is round and covered with curved roof tiles. Inside there are around 200 niches for pigeon nests. The round shape is therefore evident both in the building structure and in the roof design.

Eira e Hórreos is a communally used area. The area is paved with stone slabs. Part of the harvest was threshed here. It was also used for setting up haystacks. Equipment was also stored there. Thus, several agricultural uses are associated with a paved communal area at this site.

The Hórreos at Eira e Hórreos have a mixed construction. This construction consists of stone and wood. The roofs are covered with tiles and each has two roof slopes.

Casa Grande in Astureses is a rectangular house. It is built of granite blocks. Its tiled roof is hipped. The house also has a large square stone chimney cap.

Landscape

Monte da Madalena, a mountain, is located in the vicinity of Astureses. Monte San Trocao, also a mountain, is likewise located in the vicinity of Astureses. Both mountains are classified as named landscape features in the immediate surroundings of the place.

Geographical setting

The Museo Arqueológico Provincial, a museum, is located in the wider regional surroundings of Astureses. Manuel Márquez. Galería de Arte is also located in the wider regional surroundings and is considered a museum and cultural destination. The Museo Arqueolóxico is located there as another museum.

Peña de Francia, a summit, is located in the wider regional surroundings of Astureses. Ponte Vella is a historic site there. Serra do Faro is also located in this wider regional area and is a mountain. Thus, in addition to museums, a summit, a historic site and a mountain are named in the regional surroundings.

The remains of the Fábrica de Astureses paper mill bear the name Fábrica de Porto Carreiro. They are located a little more than 200 metres from Fondevila. Before crossing the River Pedriña, the turn-off towards the railway line leads to the remains. Fondevila, the River Pedriña and the railway line mark the named reference points of the turn-off.
