A Veiga: Pena Trevinca, Lakes and Culture

Astronomy

The Trevinca Astronomical Centre organises astronomical observations, workshops and astronomy courses. Its programme also includes observatory visits, planetarium sessions and astronomical events.

Activities

The PR-G 200 Ruta das Lagoas Glaciares da Serpe e de Ocelo circular hiking route begins and ends in A Ponte and leads to the two glacial lakes, Lagoa de Ocelo and Lagoa da Serpe. The PR-G 211 Senda Verde do Xares begins in A Veiga and ends at Playa de los Franceses in the municipality of A Veiga. The Senda Verde do Xares is an easy route that can be ridden by mountain bike and includes several signposted alternative sections.

The PR-G 199 Ruta Pena Trevinca polo Sentil Alto runs from A Ponte to Sestil Alto; the summit of Pena Trevinca is another 1.8 km away from there. The linear PR-G 198 Ruta do Maluro e Pena Trevinca leads from Vilanova towards the vicinity of the summit of Pena Trevinca.

Nature

Lagoa da Serpe is a natural lagoon of glacial origin dating from the Quaternary period. It was formed by an ice cap in the mountains. Lagoons of this kind are rare at these latitudes both on the Iberian Peninsula and in Europe.

Lagoa de Ocelo is a lagoon formed during the Ice Age. Hiking, observing native flora and fauna, and mountain sports are possible there.

Cántara da Moura is a natural area on the Corzos River, reached by a path via a wooden footbridge. It features granite rocks, waterfalls and small caves. The path to Cántara da Moura is easy and suitable for families, although it has several steps and changes in elevation.

Mountains

The protected area of Pena Trevinca covers a vast area of almost 25,000 hectares along the provincial borders of Ourense with León and Zamora. Most of this area lies in the municipalities of A Veiga and Carballeda de Valdeorras. At 2,127 m, Pena Trevinca is the highest point in Galicia.

Culture

The church of Xares has a Romanesque floor plan and a Neoclassical façade. The Museo del Lino is located in Requeixo, in the Pajar del Jardín.

The ethnographic ensemble comprises three mills, two looms, a communal oven, a hayloft and a forge. The components are distributed among various settlements. During Entroido in A Veiga, the XV Festa da Soá was held in 2019. More than 500 people ate Soá, a pork product, with potatoes and turnip greens.
