Rairiz de Veiga preserves the remains of a Roman bridge, the Ponte Catuxa or Vía XVIII, which crossed the Bidueiro stream. The wetlands of A Saínza, Ordes and Congostro form a Site of Community Importance covering approximately 1,500 ha.
The directly subordinate places in this hierarchy include Candás and Sabariz.
Nature
The Área de Allariz Biosphere Region, designated in 2005, covers 21,482 ha and includes Rairiz de Veiga as well as A Bola, Allariz and Vilar de Santos in the province of Ourense.
Carballa da Rocha is culturally significant because the tree stands near the chapel of Our Lady of Mercy and is connected with the memory of the local people. Its official trunk circumference is 6.90 metres, measured at a height of 1.30 metres; two large branches reach more than 30 metres in height.
Culture
Congostro preserves the traditional settlement structure of Limia, with narrow streets, houses clustered closely around threshing floors and groups of Hórreos, including Aira da Moa.
The Congostro Interpretation Centre houses an exhibition on the history and ethnography of the village, as well as an explanatory presentation of the Vía Nova.
The Pazo de Santa María de Ordes is an ensemble of houses decorated with coats of arms and a chapel in Rairiz de Veiga.
The communal oven Horno comunal de A Saínza de Abaixo is a listed building in the immediate vicinity of the Capilla de la Merced.
The Peto de ánimas de A Saínza is a listed roadside structure associated with the Capilla de la Merced and featuring late Baroque stylistic characteristics.
The Capela da Saínza was built in 1721 and later renovated.
The Igrexa de San Xoán is a 17th-century church with a portal in the classical rationalist Renaissance style.
The Igrexa de San Adrián de Zapeaus contains a central section of the main altar from the 17th century, a 17th-century depiction of Saint James as a pilgrim, and an Ecce Homo created by Jerónimo Domínguez in 1739.
The Igrexa de San Andrés has a Romanesque portal on its southern wall with two columns, plant-decorated capitals and three archivolts, the second and third of which bear a chequerboard pattern typical of the Romanesque style of Limia.
Routes and Places
The section of the Camino Natural Vía Nova passes through Congostro; the village's main square is surrounded by Hórreos.
The final 500 metres of the second section of the Camino Natural Vía Nova run through the village streets and end beside the Torre de A Saínza.
A route begins in Congostro at the place known as A Rebulleira and runs mostly away from paved roads.
A path leads to the Castro de San Miguel; from there, the plain of A Limia forms an impressive landscape.
Festivals
The Feira etnográfica da Pereira takes place every year on the first Sunday in August in the village of A Pereira.
The Feira da Saínza takes place on the 23rd of each month at the Campo da Feira da Saínza.
