Sabariz: Stations of the Cross, Churches and Landscape

Sabariz is located in an area with particularly important cultural values and special significance for the preservation of local fauna and flora. The village and its surroundings are home to churches, a communal oven and historic burial sites.

Culture

In the village, the remains of an old Stations of the Cross belonging to the Via Crucis de Sabariz have been preserved. It ran through the village and continued to the parish church. The surviving waymarkers include two stone crosses of the same type. The former route ran through the village to the parish church, while the two crosses served as stone markers of the Via Crucis. The surviving crosses therefore preserve a specific section of the former route through the village.

At the main altar of the Church of San Pedro de Sabariz, a 17th-century carved figure of Saint Peter seated on the cathedra dominates the altar. In the courtyard of the San Pedro de Sabariz rectory there is a medieval anthropomorphic granite sarcophagus. The church and the rectory courtyard thus bring together two different historical objects: a dated carved figure and a medieval granite sarcophagus.

The village of Sabariz is home to the Forno comunal de Sabariz, a recently restored communal oven in a central location. The Camposanto de Sabariz features traditional earth graves oriented from east to west. There are also several interesting and ornate graves, as well as aristocratic pantheons. The cemetery brings together traditional orientation, ornate grave design and aristocratic pantheons. The east-west orientation applies to the traditional earth graves, while the ornate graves and aristocratic pantheons represent additional forms of grave design.

Landscape

Monte Calvo is located in the immediate surroundings of Sabariz. In the wider regional surroundings are the mountain Serra das Moas, the peak Pico Carbuceiro and the mountain Sierra Moura. The elevations mentioned comprise three mountains and one peak: Monte Calvo, Serra das Moas and Sierra Moura are mountains, while Pico Carbuceiro is a peak.
