Coast and Nature

Praia de Area is located in the Area district on the slope of Monte Faro, 4.5 kilometres from Viveiro. The beach stretches for 1,200 metres and combines white sand with gentle surf and calm water. Dunes surround Praia de Area, while a forest descends towards the sea. These dunes are of considerable scenic importance. The picturesque Insua de Area is also part of the landscape and serves as a refuge for seabirds. Since 2024, Praia de Seiramar has been designated as a dog beach.

Nature in the Surrounding Area

In the nearby Souto da Retorta stands a remarkable eucalyptus tree, whose height is given as 61.78 metres and whose circumference is 7.55 metres. Souto da Retorta is located in the Chavín district within the municipality of Viveiro and is designated as a natural monument. In addition to the eucalyptus mentioned above, the woodland there includes around 600 other large trees. Thus, both the coastal landscape of Area and the trees of Chavín are among the municipality’s diverse natural features.

Culture and History

In Viveiro, the Porta de Carlos V is also known as Mayor and del Castillo. It was built in 1548 and is one of the three surviving gates of Viveiro’s former city walls. San Francisco is a former monastery and is now the parish church of Santiago. The building has a Romanesque portal from the 12th century and a Gothic apse. Several exhibition rooms in San Francisco display religious images from Viveiro’s Semana Santa processions. Viveiro’s Semana Santa is classified as a festival of international tourist interest. During Semana Santa, the Encuentro procession takes place in the Praza Maior and in the atrium of Santa María.

Tours and Festivals

Viveiro’s augmented-reality experience enables visitors to take a tour through the city. On their mobile phones, they can discover well-known places, routes and 3D reconstructions. In this way, the experience combines a city tour with digital representations of the places and routes mentioned above. The traditional Romaxe do Bo Xantar de Naseiro is celebrated again in Viveiro from 21 to 26 August. It includes music, gastronomy, tradition and activities for all age groups. The venue is the Campo da Festa de Naseiro.
