In the municipality of Carballedo, the linear, 7-kilometre-long Sendero del Garabullo runs from Castro through forests and riverside landscapes to the Penedo do Garabullo viewpoint. Penedo do Garabullo is a natural rock formation with several small paths and views of the Fondós and its confluence with the Miño, as well as the Cotarelo and Voutureira peaks.

Culture and history

The municipality of Carballedo is home to the Cruceiro de Santa Baia de Búbal, a granite wayside cross dating from the 18th century. The Igrexa Parroquial de Santo Estevo de Chouzán belongs to a former monastery and dates back to the second half of the 12th century. The Igrexa Parroquial de San Xoán da Cova belongs to a former Benedictine nunnery and dates from the late 12th century. Because of the construction of the Os Peares reservoir, this church was moved from its original location.

The Cruceiro de Furco is a granite cross featuring depictions of Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows on a capital, as well as an octagonal shaft. The Cruceiro de Cartelos depicts Christ and the Virgin Mary on a capital with volutes. The village of A Matanza features traditional regional architecture. There was a tradition of placing deer antlers on the lintels of houses for protection. In Castro, the Feira de Castro market takes place monthly at Campo da Feira.

Nature and landscape

Pena Veidosa was designated a Site of Community Importance (SCI) within the Natura 2000 network in 2004 and was granted the protection status of a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) in 2014. The protected area covers 2,321 hectares and extends across the municipalities of San Cristovo de Cea and Carballedo. Most of the area consists of low shrubland with heath and grassland; oak is the predominant tree in the forests.

The Pena Veidosa protected area is home, among other species, to goshawks, subalpine warblers, sparrowhawks, Montagu’s harriers, golden-striped salamanders and stag beetles. The various bat species include barbastelle bats, mouse-eared bats and horseshoe bats. The landscape of the Canón do Sil in the Ribeira Sacra combines terraced vineyards, granite outcrops, oak and chestnut forests, as well as cork oaks and strawberry trees. The high cliffs of the gorges are sometimes considered a refuge for highly endangered birds of prey.

Hiking

Access to Penedo do Garabullo leads from a car park by the road for approximately 15 minutes through partly difficult terrain to a signposted entrance; sturdy footwear and careful walking are recommended.

A holiday apartment in Carballedo can complement your stay; the decision to choose accommodation remains up to travellers’ own preferences and requires neither a specific property nor a specific itinerary, leaving travellers room to shape their stay on site themselves.
