The medieval walls of Monforte have three named exits: Cadea Vella, Alcazaba and Nova. The Museo de Arte Sacra das Clarisas de Monforte is located in the rooms of the Santa Clara de Monforte de Lemos convent, which was founded in 1622.
Construction of the Colegio de Nosa Señora da Antiga began in 1593 and was completed in 1913. Its museum contains, among other works, paintings by El Greco and Andrea del Sarto. The MUFERGA railway roundhouse is regarded as an outstanding building of Europe’s industrial heritage and as the largest restored and operational example of its kind in Spain.
The surrounding area of Monforte de Lemos is home to several museums: the Centro del Vino de la Ribeira Sacra, the Convento das Clarisas de Monforte, the Museo de Casas de Muñecas and the Monforte de Lemos Railroad Museum.
History
Calle Falagueira is considered one of the most historically significant and picturesque streets in Monforte. The Torre del Homenaje was built between the 13th and 15th centuries; the Museo Torre del Homenaje houses an exhibition on the history of the tower and its historical context.
The Ponte Vella in Monforte de Lemos has Roman origins. Its present design dates from the 16th century, and the bridge consists of six semicircular arches.
