Coence: Churches and Historic Sites

The Church of San Miguel de Coence is of Romanesque origin and has preserved almost all of its original fabric.

Its tympanum is located above the main portal. It is decorated with a cross motif inscribed in a circle, as well as Greek and Saint Andrew’s crosses whose arms end in a T-shape.

The wall paintings in the nave and chancel of the Church of San Miguel de Coence were restored in the early 2000s. They depict scenes from the Passion of Christ, the Annunciation and the iconography of Saint Michael. Thus, Romanesque architectural features and an artistic decoration restored in the early 2000s meet in the same church.

Culture

San Mamede de Coence was built in the 18th century and is designed in the Baroque style. The church has a rectangular nave and a square presbytery. An altarpiece from the 16th century has been preserved in the main chapel.

Several periods of history therefore come together closely at San Mamede: the surviving altarpiece dates from the 16th century, the church building from the 18th century, and its design follows the Baroque style. The rectangular floor plan of the nave and the square presbytery give the interior a clearly describable form.

The two churches therefore differ clearly in their date of construction and design. San Miguel combines Romanesque origins, a richly decorated tympanum and restored wall paintings; San Mamede represents Baroque architecture with an older altarpiece in the main chapel.
