Campos de Vila: Geological Route and Cultural Heritage

Geology

From Leixazós to Campos de Vila, the PR-G-192 Ruta del Plegamiento Geológico de Campodola passes beneath the monumental geological fold of Campodola. The fold characterizes the geological nature of this route and accompanies the section between the two aforementioned places. In accordance with the homologation standards of the Federación Galega de Montañismo, the PR-G-192 is signposted. Information panels stand at both ends of the route and accompany its course with information. Thus, orientation on the route begins and ends at a designated information point in each case.

The two routes present different landscapes: on the PR-G-192, the geological fold lies between Leixazós and Campos de Vila, while the PR-G-193 runs from the unpaved riverside path via Casa do Vello and San Xoán to the Pacios Valley.

Hiking and Landscape

The PR-G-193 Valle del Río Quiroga is a hiking route that starts on the road to A Seara. This starting point is located near Campos de Vila. The path is unpaved and runs parallel to the Quiroga River. The route leads as far as the village of Casa do Vello, before an uphill path leads to the chapel of San Xoán. The route then descends through the valley of the Pacios River. Its course therefore includes several clearly named landscape sections: the Quiroga River, the village of Casa do Vello, the ascent to the chapel and the valley of the Pacios River.

The PR-G-193 includes two alvarizas, both of which are well preserved. The route also passes old houses and other structures surrounded by native vegetation and meadows. These elements lie along the path and add visible traces of older construction and traditional use to the landscape. If you are travelling by bicycle, the section from the starting point to Casa do Vello is fully cycleable on the unpaved path. This section is suitable for children.

Culture and History

The Ferrería de Quintá has been documented since 1562. It is a traditional ironworks for casting and smithing. Its history therefore encompasses both its dating to the 16th century and the two aforementioned areas of work. Campos de Vila is also home to the Capela da Virxe do Carme. It is classified as a cultural heritage site; the interest code for this classification is ART.

The Festa da Virxe do Carme is celebrated in Campos de Vila on 16 July. The celebration includes a mass as well as a procession. A dance takes place in the evening. The feast day, chapel and traditional ironworks thus stand as independent cultural points of interest alongside the hiking routes and geological landscapes.
