Sarria: Hiking Trails, Architectural Heritage and Regional Specialties

The Ruta dos Monasterios is a circular hiking route from Sarria via Piñeira and back to Sarria. It can also be travelled by bicycle and is suitable for people with reduced mobility.

Nature

The Ruta da Foz das Aceas is ideal for hiking, relaxing and experiencing nature. The Ruta do Monte de Sta. Cristina includes a viewpoint overlooking the Veiga. Sarria is located in the Ribeira Sacra e Serras do Oribio e Courel Biosphere Reserve.

In the wider region around Sarria is the Vigilancia Forestal viewpoint. The Monte Acebedo mountain is also located there. The mountain Pico de Santa Irene, the Alto da Forcela mountain and the Alto de Torrentes mountain are likewise situated in this wider regional area.

Culture and History

Sarria is connected to the A Coruña–Monforte de Lemos railway line. The former prison building of the comarca on Rúa da Mercede was a prison from 1930 to 1950. Today, the building houses the Oficina Municipal de Turismo de Sarria and most of the temporary exhibitions.

The building on Rúa da Mercede therefore combines its former function as a prison with its present-day use by the tourist office and the temporary exhibitions. Its historical period of use as a prison lasted from 1930 to 1950; its current function is clearly distinguished from this.

Santiago de Barbadelo has been recognised as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) since 3 May 2008. Sarria has an architectural heritage featuring examples of medieval religious, civil and military architecture.

In the wider regional area around Sarria is the Pazo de Tor palace. The Monforte de Lemos Railroad Museum is also located there. Another museum in this regional area is the Museo Diocesano y Catedralicio de Lugo.

In Sarria, visitors can try Pulpo á Feira at Campo da Feira on Rúa da Mercede on the 6th, 20th and 27th of each month. The dish is also available at a restaurant or pulpería.

The Festa do Cocido do Porco Celta da Comarca de Sarria is a gastronomic event celebrating cocido de Porco Celta. It is associated with an event weekend held 15 days before Carnival.

For Pulpo á Feira, Campo da Feira on Rúa da Mercede and the three monthly dates—the 6th, 20th—are specified.
